Christian Service Program

At St. Michael High School, the Christian Service Program helps students grow as servant-leaders modeled after Jesus Christ. This program is responsible for providing avenues in which the students give back more than 20,000 volunteer hours of service to the community annually.


Purpose of the Program: To provide for the kinds of powerful interpersonal experiences that can change the hearts of our students and teach them to readily see the dignity of every human person.


Serving others is at the very heart of the Christian life, for Jesus came not to be served, but to serve. Jesus teaches us again and again that in encountering and serving people in need, we are meeting and loving God.


Accordingly, the students, faculty, and staff work hard to create a culture of service at St. Michael High School, where Christian service is integrated naturally into everything we do. Students help coordinate service projects through the Student Council, Key Club, Beta Club, Campus Ministry, and many other student organizations.


Faculty and staff encourage Christian service through the visible example of their many volunteer activities in the community, and coaches encourage team service projects to build unity and leadership. Throughout the year, students have countless opportunities to serve their school, church, and community.

Christian Service Program: Forms and Deadlines

  • Service Hours Forms

  • Deadlines

    Fall: The first Monday in December the first half of the required hour documentation must be turned in to religion teacher at this time.


    Spring: The last week in April, the second half of the required hour documentation must be turned in to religion teacher at this time.

  • Consequences

    Fall: Students who have not met requirements by December may not take the midterm exams in any of their classes until they have met the requirements.


    Spring: Students may not take the final exams in any of their classes until they have met the requirements.

  • Awards

    Students who go above and beyond the requirements are recognized with Christian Service Awards each spring at the Christian Service Mass. The categories and requirements for these awards are:

    • Bronze Award: 10 hours above the minimum requirement
    • Silver Award: 25 hours above the minimum requirement
    • Gold Award: 50 hours above the minimum requirement

Liturgy

The Eucharist is the source and summit of our Catholic faith. Therefore, Mass is celebrated at St. Michael at the following times:


ALL SCHOOL LITURGY – This liturgy takes place once a month in our school gym(s). Students take part in assisting with the celebration as lectors, altar servers, singers with liturgy choir, gift bearers and general participation in the Mass. All students are called to reverence and required to wear proper dress uniform for this day. 


FRIDAY MORNING LITURGY – At least once a month or more, Mass is offered in the Our Lady of Wisdom chapel before school on Friday. Students will be made aware of mass offerings in their religion class and through the school announcements. Students are welcome to attend at 6:45 a.m. Dress uniform is not required.


Outside of the Mass we celebrate the Eucharist through:

  • Theology Class Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament once a month
  • Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament during bi-yearly Reconciliation Services
  • Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the chapel before school at least once a week

Campus Ministry

Campus Ministry at St. Michael is the heart of who we are and what we do. In our mission to form the whole student, Campus Ministry works to weave faith into the daily lives of our students. We offer a variety of opportunities for students to see the beauty of the Catholic faith and connect to their faith in dynamic and practical ways.

  • Peer Ministry

    Students who would like to be peer leaders in the faith are invited to join Peer Ministry. Through this club, students are built up and empowered to share Christ in the classes, peer groups, clubs, and sports with which they are already involved. This is a chance for them to share Christ in the places that He has placed them. As seniors, students can also take a half-credit class, Leadership and Faith, which allows them to learn practical, intellectual, and spiritual skills for being a leader in the faith.

  • Retreat Program

    Each grade level and our faculty attend a yearly retreat. This gives all those in the St. Michael community a chance to come away from daily life to refresh, recharge, and reorient themselves. We also allow other optional retreats and attend events throughout the year, such as: Angola Retreat, March for Life, Abbey Youth fest, MP3 Nights, Diocesan Youth Conference, Peer Ministry Retreat, Nicaragua Mission Trip, and many more.

March for Life Pilgrimage

Every year in January, St. Michael High School campus minister Emily Froeba organizes and directs a pilgrimage to Washington DC in order to attend the National March for Life. St. Michael directs this nine bus pilgrimage and invites other high schools and churches to participate in this spiritual journey to celebrate life in the womb. Priests, seminarians, and religious Sisters are also part of this 6-day-long trip. The group visits historical DC sights, attends the march, and hears speakers on abortion. This pilgrimage allows students to see the beauty of the Catholic faith and the dignity of each and every human life – even their own!


In 2020, over 100 St. Michael students and faculty joined others from across the Baton Rouge Diocese to travel to Washington, D.C. to participate in the March for Life and speak out for the lives of the unborn.

MP3 Program (Music, Prayer, Praise, Play)

Three to four times a year, St. Michael hosts MP3 nights. These evenings of fun and faith are for St. Michael students as well as students throughout the Diocese. MP3s give students a prayerful and safe place to be with friends as well as provide an opportunity to hear different speakers and engage in adoration and reconciliation.
