The LA GATOR Scholarship Program is Louisiana's first education scholarship account (ESA), providing scholarship accounts to eligible students.  LA GATOR stands for Louisiana Giving All True Opportunity to Rise and was created to ensure that all students have access to diverse educational opportunities.  Parents can use the LA GATOR funds for approved educational services, including tuition and fees to attend the non-public school of their choice.  

• New students entering the LA GATOR Program from a public school are eligible regardless of the School Performance Score of the public school they are exiting.    
• The LA GATOR application window for the 2026-2027 school year opens Sunday, March 1, 2026 at 9:00am and will close on Monday, March 16, 2026 at 11:59pm.
• The LA GATOR Scholarship Program web page serves as the central hub for information about the program.  The site should be regularly updated with important program details and resources, including the rules and regulations set forth by the LDOE.  To receive email updates about LA GATOR, sign up HERE.

The State of Louisiana School Choice Program (SCP) for Certain Students with Exceptionalities is designed to empower families of qualifying students to choose the school that best addresses their child’s needs.  Students with disabilities in East Baton Rouge Parish are eligible to participate and can use the award to send their special needs child to an eligible participating school with special needs programs.

• Students participating in the SCP must meet certain eligibility criteria including having one or more of a specific identified learning exceptionality, have a current IEP/504 plan, and is eligible to attend a Louisiana public school in grades K-12.  The awards are not income based; new families only need to submit proof of Louisiana residency to St. Michael by a date not yet announced.
• The SCP provides tuition assistance at a rate of 50% of the state per pupil funding for the student's school district and the amount awarded cannot exceed the cost of the private school tuition.  Families are responsible for paying the difference if tuition exceeds that amount.   
• The School Choice Program application window for the 2026-2027 school year opens on Monday, February 2, 2026 and closes on Friday, March 6, 2026.  Supporting documentation must be submitted to SMHS by Friday, March 13, 2026.   The Louisiana Department of Education conducts a lottery to award student participation, with a priority given to continuing students.

The ACE Scholarships Program-Louisiana is designed to provide students in Grades K - 12 with additional opportunities to attend the non-public school of their choice.  It is a Louisiana Tuition Donation Credit Program.

• Applicants are eligible based on level of income for the family and Louisiana residency.  An ACE Scholarship provides partial tuition assistance and in the recent past, the award amount has averaged $4,500.  
• Application and acceptance to St. Michael High school is required.

The Arete Scholars Program is designed to provide students in Grades K - 12 with additional opportunities to attend the non-public school of their choice. It is a Louisiana Tuition Donation Credit Program.

• Applicants are eligible based on level of income for the family and Louisiana residency.  An Arete Scholarship provides partial tuition assistance.   Maximum awards for the 2026-2027 school year are $4,950 for grades 9-12.
• Application and acceptance to St. Michael High school is required.   
• The Arete Scholarship application window for the 2026-2027 school year opens March 3, 2026 at 9am and closes on May 1, 2026 (or until the maximum number of applications are received). 
• Arete Scholarships are provided on a first-applied, first-awarded basis and new applications are accepted as funds are available.  Priority is given to returning Arete students and applicants who attended school on a Louisiana Scholarship Program award during the previous school year.  There is a nominal processing fee for completing an application.
• Applications for the Arete Program are made directly through the Arete website.

The Aspiring Scholars Program is designed to provide students in Grades K - 12 with additional opportunities to attend the non-public school of their choice. It is a Louisiana Tuition Donation Credit Program.

The Diocese of Baton Rouge Tuition Assistance Program is designed to provide students in grades K-12 in Catholic schools with additional opportunities to further their Catholic education.

Application for assistance is not a guarantee that assistance will be provided.  A letter of special circumstance is highly encouraged to explain your personal situation.

The Black and Indian Mission Fund (B&I) is designed to provide African American Catholics or Native American Catholics in grades K-12 in Catholic schools with additional opportunities to further their Catholic education.  

Donations received by the national organization provide partial tuition assistance to Black or American Indian students in Grades K – 12 who attend Catholic schools based on financial need.  

• Applicants are eligible based on level of income for the family, and the funding provides partial tuition assistance distributed according to need. Application for assistance is not a guarantee that assistance will be provided.  A letter of special circumstance is highly encouraged to explain your personal situation.

Tours provide families with the opportunity to visit the campus and observe a typical day in the life of St. Michael High School students. In addition to the general tour and overview, parents and their students are encouraged to ask questions about any aspect of St. Michael during the visit.

Families interested in attending a tour must schedule their visit in advance. The tours will last about an hour and are intended for small groups or individuals. To encourage questions and discussion tailored to the prospective student applicant, the number of attendees per tour is limited.

Registration opens in September! 

Once you have submitted your student’s application to St. Michael, a link will be emailed to parents for reserving a time slot for the personal interview portion of the application process in November and December 2026 and January 2027.  The interview is an opportunity for your child to interact with an SMHS faculty or staff member and provides us an opportunity to get to know your student and learn about their interests.  Interviews traditionally last approximately a ½ hour to 45 minutes and at least one parent is required to attend.

Applications for prospective incoming 9th graders for the 2027-2028 school year are due on Friday, November 20, 2026.  To simplify the application process of the Baton Rouge area’s partnering Catholic high schools, students should identify a first and second school choice.  Prospective students should only submit an application to and attend testing at their school of first choice.  When submitting the application, copies of the birth certificate and social security card are required for uploading or can be provided directly to the SMHS Registrar.

Any current 8th grader interested in applying beyond this initial deadline is more than welcome to submit an application and will be included in the first wave of applicants as time and space allows.  Late applicants will complete the admissions process steps remaining from the time of application submission. 

Applicants for 10th and 11th grades are welcome to submit an application at any time throughout the year.  Contact the Registrar for more information about the upperclassmen admissions process (lsteib@smhsbr.org; 225-753-9782).

Placement Test: 

The Placement Test is given on Saturday, December 5, 2026, from 8 am–11:00 am to all 9th grade applicants that indicated St. Michael as school of first choice.  Prospective students should arrive to campus by 7:45am. Please bring several #2 pencils, and calculators are permitted.

Tuition Assistance Meeting:

While the students are taking the placement test, parents/guardians are invited to meet in the SMHS Cafeteria at 8:15am for refreshments and an opportunity to gather more information about the various tuition assistance programs offered.

Admissions letters and welcome packets will be mailed on Monday, February 1, 2027.

Incoming 9th grade students should attend one of these evening meetings accompanied by a parent/guardian on dates to be determined. SMHS administration will cover important school information and the course selection process. The meetings will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Building.

The deadline to register for students at St. Michael High School for the 2027-2028 school year is March 5, 2027.

Eligible incoming 9th grade students will take placement tests for high school courses on the morning of Saturday, March 2027. Details about registering for these tests will be provided at the Freshman Scheduling Night meetings.  These tests are only for 8th graders enrolled in courses for high school at their current school.

The tuition assistance application deadline for the Baton Rouge Diocese as well as St. Michael is Thursday, April 15, 2027.  This tuition assistance application can be accessed through an account created in the FACTS Management system. Offers of admission from schools of first choice will be mailed in February. 

Notification from schools of second or third choice regarding completion of their application process will be sent in February.

If a student receives a letter from his or her school of second or third choice requesting completion of the application process, he or she will not receive an offer of admission from the school of first choice. In this case, the school of first choice will follow up with a letter to such applicants. These letters will be mailed February.

If a student will not receive an offer of admission from any school, a letter from the school of first choice will be sent by February. Included in this letter will be an explanation that the application was reviewed by the schools of second and third choice, and that admission is not available in any of the schools.

The PreACT 8/9 Test is ACT’s (American College Test) comprehensive assessment program for students entering high school. It provides information about a child’s level of preparation in English, mathematics, science, and reading along with details about his/her interests, needs, and plans.

Yes. In order to correctly assess a student’s academic achievement and make appropriate recommendations for placement, it is necessary to test all incoming freshmen students in December of their 8th grade year

The Placement Test results (along with report card grades, earlier standardized test scores, and the recommendation of the elementary school principal) are used to schedule students into appropriate levels and courses for the ninth grade.

The Principal of St. Michael High School shall appoint an Admission Committee comprised of members of the faculty and professional staff. The committee shall review the records of all applications for admission selecting students based on their current principal’s recommendation, structured interview of parent/guardian and student, standardized test scores, grades, conduct, absenteeism, other educational needs, and the attestation of the pastor (where applicable).

Unless the Admission Committee articulates a professionally based opinion for declining to admit an applicant, the priority of admissions shall be as follows:

1. Catholic siblings of students in the school, of parents who are involved in the ministry of their church parishes as attested by their pastor, and who attend Catholic elementary schools,
2. Catholic children of parents who are involved in the ministry of their church parishes as attested by their pastor, and who attend Catholic elementary schools.
3. Catholic siblings of students in the school, of parents who are involved in the ministry of their church parishes as attested by their pastor, and who attend non-Catholic elementary schools,
4. Catholic children of parents who are involved in the ministry of their church parishes as attested by their pastor, and who attend non-Catholic elementary schools,
5. Non-Catholic children who attend Catholic elementary schools, and
6. Non-Catholic children who attend non-Catholic elementary schools.
